- King's Base / King's Height ratio: between 40%-50%
- King's Cross: less than or equal to 20% of the total height

- Type: Plastic, wood, paper, cardboard, leather, cloth, vinyl, marble; opaque and smooth
- Colors:

• High contrast between light and dark sections, yet pleasing to the eye
• Light contrast between the squares and the chessmen, which aids the eye in discerning empty squares
• Red and black squares are nonstandard

- Squares: 2" (5.08cm) to 2-1/2" (6.35cm)
- Tables:

• 27" (68.58cm) - 30" (76.2cm) high (normal table height)
• Provide ample room for accessories and forearms
